Where Do SLOs Live?

Course Student Learning Outcomes - where do they belong? The course outlines of record? The college catalogue? The college web page? Syllabi?

What about degree and certificate outcomes?

The March ACCJC newsletter contains an article on where SLOs "live".

The article, written by Commissioner Dr. John Nixon (President of Mt. San Antonio College) with Dr. Barbara Beno (President of the ACCJC), highlights some of the Commission's expectations with respect to where and how SLOs need to be disclosed to students. http://www.accjc.org/pdf/March%202009%20newsletter.pdf

Important conclusions from the article:

1. All individual course sections must have the same SLO;
2. SLOs belong in the course outline of record;
3. Degree and Certificate SLOs belong in the catalogue or via internet link;
4. Course SLOs should be identified in the catalogue or by internet link; and
5. SLOs must be published in the course syllabi.

There is no discussion about student or administrative services, but these divisions need to think by analogy where SLOs belong.

(Please take a moment in your busy schedules to take a look at the article.)

The disclosure of assessment methods, means and criteria will be covered in an upcoming issue in the ACCJC newsletter. The blog will provide a link.

Got CB-21, CB-8, CB-4?

The Accountability Report for Community Colleges (ARCC) relies on your clean and accurate data for important performance indicators such as the basic skills improvement and success rates. But do you know where your courses are? What is degree applicable? What is a transferable course? What is a basic skills course? How far below transfer is your basic skills class? How was that decision made?

Take a look at the phenomenal work of Janet Fulks and others to tackle these exact questions!

SLO Coordinators and Researchers - How Do You Do?

At the recent SLO coordinators and researchers regional meeting at Mt. Sac., the discussion centered on what we think we do well in our roles at our colleges and what we think our counterpart does well. The observations, needs and perceptions were quite interesting. Take a look at the matrix created at the meeting; we'll post the others from Merritt, Mesa and Sierra next week. (Until I get skilled at this, documents will
be on our companion website.)

Any comments from those who attended?

Pretty cool. I guess I'm a novice -- I've only had threaded discussions, never a blog.

greetings from the 21st Century!

Hiya folks!

We are taking a page from President Obama, and creating new ways of networking with one another. Over the past several years, we have seen our community of practice grow as assessment becomes a more critical piece of our institutional fabric. We see this space as a place to disucuss our challenges, to satisfy our hunger for good practice, to expand opportunities to dialogue with colleagues, and construct a robust social network to keep the field up to date on the latest developments.

So jump on and enjoy the ride!
