Where Do SLOs Live?

Course Student Learning Outcomes - where do they belong? The course outlines of record? The college catalogue? The college web page? Syllabi?

What about degree and certificate outcomes?

The March ACCJC newsletter contains an article on where SLOs "live".

The article, written by Commissioner Dr. John Nixon (President of Mt. San Antonio College) with Dr. Barbara Beno (President of the ACCJC), highlights some of the Commission's expectations with respect to where and how SLOs need to be disclosed to students. http://www.accjc.org/pdf/March%202009%20newsletter.pdf

Important conclusions from the article:

1. All individual course sections must have the same SLO;
2. SLOs belong in the course outline of record;
3. Degree and Certificate SLOs belong in the catalogue or via internet link;
4. Course SLOs should be identified in the catalogue or by internet link; and
5. SLOs must be published in the course syllabi.

There is no discussion about student or administrative services, but these divisions need to think by analogy where SLOs belong.

(Please take a moment in your busy schedules to take a look at the article.)

The disclosure of assessment methods, means and criteria will be covered in an upcoming issue in the ACCJC newsletter. The blog will provide a link.
